Scope of Works

Proposition and installation of an anti-slip coating to steps.

We were contacted by the Anderson Group to see if we could propose & install an anti-slip coating that could be applied to the steps leading up to their office building

These works were required fairly urgently as the existing slippery surface was a health & safety concern to the client and they were keen to get this rectified before the winter months set in. We carried out a site visit to ascertain the scope of works required and the logistics of the project. As this was the only entrance into the building, access had to be maintained at all times so works had to be phased accordingly. Health & Safety was of paramount importance as this was a very busy entrance in use constantly from 0700hrs-1900hrs on a daily basis, therefore, additional safety barriers with signage were used and some of the works were carried out over the weekend to avoid restricted access during curing times.

We proposed Contar Dekor Broadcast system as the finished surface specifically for its fast curing properties and its decorative range of coloured quartz aggregates. Following quite extensive surface preparation, we had to infill the gaps between the slabs and apply a scratch coat to the entire area to ensure the gaps did not mirror through to the new finished surface. The stair treads required a nosing that complies with current BS & DDA regulations and due to the unusual large bull nose shape on the steps, we installed Gradus GR62 exterior nosing with a double anti-slip exterior insert, colour tornado, for the extra non-slip properties. In addition to the nosings, we replaced the old entrance matwell with a new Gradus Esplanade 1000 18mm open construction with PVC wipers which required a complete new frame and also an 18mm build up screed to ensure the new matwell finished flush with the new finished surfacing whilst ensuring the doors that open outwards still had clearance to do so.

The client was very particular regarding the colours of the aggregates used for the finished surface so we created some samples with various colour blends until one of the grey mixes was approved. The client also requested the stair riser was coated in a specific RAL number which was the colour red used in the company logo. This again was accomplished using a heavy duty floor coating by Bradite which is made to order in most RAL colours. The client was adamant that they did not want to see any of the original gaps within the newly finished surfacing and did not want to see any joins in the stair nosing.

Upon completion of this project we received so many pleasing comments from the company directors and members of their staff regarding the outstanding quality of the works overall and in praise of the team that executed them. We carried out slip tests on all areas which met the requirements and a full slip test report was provided to the client.
